The aim of this study was to analyze the frequency of foot problems among catering workers.

Materials and methods: The study was based on an original, anonymous online survey among people belonging to Facebook groups for catering workers. The 25-question survey focused on the presence on skin and nail lesions on the foot, foot pain, knee pain or back pain, and factors possibly contributing to the occurrence of podiatric problems such as age, body mass index, assigned job position, work time spent on standing or walking, and footwear used. Correlations between these variables were analyzed in the search for possible risk ractors for foot problems. The responses were analyzed using medians, weighted averages, Pearson's correlation coefficinet, Chi2 and Mann Whitney tests.

Results: 526 people participated in the survey, 419 of whom were finally included in the study. 68.0% catering workers declared that they had problems with their feet since they worked in the catering sector, and 18.1% said that they work contributed to seekeing services of a podiatrist or cosmetologist. Calluses were most commonly reported - they accounted for 48.4% of all reported foot problems. 92.4% of catering workers reported foot pain during or after work, and 65.1% of them indicated the forefoot as the most painful area. 64.2% participants complained of leg swelling after work, 80.7% of which was swelling of the feet. There was a weak correlation between foot pain and Body Mass Index (r=0.102, p=0.037), and no significant correlation between foot pain and age (r=0.048, p=0.326), job position (r=0.066, p=0.177), and between foot pain and work time spent on standing or walking (r=0.068, p=0.164).

Conclusions: Foot problems are common among catering workers. The most frequent foot skin problem are calluses, while the most painful area of the foot is the forefoot. Foot pain is more noticeable in people who report swelling of the lower limbs after work. Knee and back pain are connected with more foot pain.
