On the search for cosmetic products that would be safe for people sensitized to cosmetic ingredients included into Polish Baseline Series for patch testing

Introduction: Patients who are allergic to specific ingredients in cosmetics, often turning to the product, suggesting only the manufacturer's declaration about the "hypoallergenic" properties, despite the possible side effects. Therefore, it is important to help these patients in deciphering the often incomprehensible for them cosmetics, giving them access to current bases of cosmetics, among which will be able to easily find the necessary and corresponding products.
Objective: The aim of this study was to create a "safe" sets of cosmetics for everyday use, for men and women with allergies to cosmetic ingredients detected in the routine diagnosis of contact allergy by Polish Baseline Series. The development of such a list was to support people who are allergic to specific ingredients to avoid factors that cause their disease.
Materials and Methods: There is a list of the necessary daily use cosmetics for women and men. Then put together the documentation of cosmetics compositions available in the market belong to various categories. Cosmetics compositions were analyzed for the presence of cosmetic ingredients, which sensitization can be detected by Polish Baseline Series.
Results: It was analyzed 200 cosmetics compositions, of which 68 were selected with a reduced risk of allergic reaction and which participation has been created the list of "safe" sets of cosmetics for men and women who are allergic to specific cosmetic ingredients, included in the Polish Baseline Series for the diagnosis of contact allergy, with the possibility to choose from several of them. Among the 200 analyzed cosmetics only 19% did not contain any ingredients that are included because of the frequency of sensitization in Polish Baseline Series for the routine diagnosis of contact allergy. Among the selected 68 cosmetics with a reduced risk of allergic reactions, 62% were free of fragrances, while 84% did not contain even a single preservative included in Polish Baseline Series.
Conclusions: 1)There is a possibility of selection of safe cosmetics, that is, those which do not contain substances known to be allergenic, included in the Polish Baseline Series, for diagnostics of contact allergy, but most cosmetic products available in pharmacies and drugstores, contains ingredients of known allergenic potential 2)Independent choice of "safe" cosmetics, designed for hygiene and skin care, can be a problem for the patient and carrying a high risk of disease relapse 3)The creation of a ready list of the necessary cosmetics for daily use, aims at helping the people who are allergic to the individual components by facilitating the identification of "safe" for them cosmetics 4)The most common cosmetics ingredients which are known for causing allergies, are fragrances and preservatives.
